HyperJar, 2022
Native App
An exciting combination of cutting-edge tech, data-driven decisions and human-centred design.
Award-winning app and organisation obsessed with building the next generation
of financial services to help people thrive, even in uncertain times.
While cutting-edge technology fosters innovation, a human-centred design provides a first-class user experience.
Role:
– Principle Product Designer
– Head of Design (promoted)
Initiatives:
– UX/UI Audit
– UX/UI Refinement
– Set Design Principles
– Create Design System
– Design New Features
– Hire 3 Designers
– Hire 1 Content Designer
– Establish Process
Hired initially as Principal Product Designer to lead on discovery and delivery work streams for both HyperJar native apps (iOS & Android). I conceptualised new features with founders, stakeholders and SMEs to identify customer objectives and pain points. Next, I mapped user flows, designed wireframes and built prototypes for testing, before iterating and producing pixel-perfect handover designs for build.
Promotion to Head of Design was obtained within six months after improving app consistency and engagement by establishing product design principles, setting a design process, crafting a design system and hiring three additional designers to scale up the design function.
With a startup mentality and pragmatic approach, I worked at pace to identify areas in the business that would benefit from design refinement. Interviewing key shareholders across core teams provided a good understanding of actions that had success and impact in the past, and also avoided the duplication of effort and potential mistakes.
Outcome
HyperJar spent the last few years building an impressive base of 100,000 customers, by the time I joined in 2021. This was a positive signal of product/market fit, and for me, this was an opportunity to double down on successful features, remove friction in the UX, improve UI component consistency, and provide the right amount of education at the right time using progressive disclosure.
These design improvements combined with the team effort and delivery of many innovative features helped HyperJar accomplish the following in 2022; won six industry awards, increased TrustPilot score from 4.5 to 4.6 stars and tripled the customer base to 300,000.
